Orthodontic Treatment for Young Children

November 15, 2012

Misaligned teeth are dental problems common across all generations. Misalignment can happen to anyone and arises not because of poor dental care, but occurs naturally because of poor tooth development. Some things to blame include the early loss of milk teeth or the rapid growth of permanent teeth replacing milk teeth. Habits such as thumb sucking may also apply force to teeth causing misalignment. Whatever the case, it is important that your child get orthodontic treatment early on to prevent the onset of further complications. The following is your guide to orthodontics for young children.

When Should Treatment Start?

Orthodontic assessment and treatment normally starts around the ages of six to eight. This is normally the time your child’s adult teeth erupt and dental development becomes crucial. Most functional problems that threaten and affect oral health also manifest during this period. Your child can get braces once misalignment is evident and all adult teeth are in.

Starting treatment at this age is advisable because braces for young children usually last less than or a little over a year. Despite dental innovations, installing orthodontics later on in life may result in longer treatment time. Most dentists recognize these years as a window of opportunity to change the direction of tooth development for the better.

Ideal as it is to get treatment at this age, most kids are still fearful of getting braces. Many are conscious of their appearance even at a young age, and it is important to reinforce why treatment is important. The following are some of the things you can do as a parent to help your child cope with brace installation.

Constant Encouragement

Remind your child repeatedly why it is important that they get braces at this age. Constantly remind them that it is not as bad as they think and they will benefit from it in the long run. Encouragement and reinforcement from you serves as a foundation for proper orthodontic care.

Take the Journey with Them

Be involved in every step of your child’s orthodontic experience. Be there for them whenever they need help, because braces can be difficult to maintain, especially at such a young age. Assist whenever possible, such as when they have difficulty brushing or flossing. Be present in all check-ups and orthodontic calibrations and be fully aware of what’s going on.
