Different Types of Orthodontic Treatments for Malocclusion

September 24, 2012

Malocclusion may cause several problems. You may have trouble eating and speaking properly, as your teeth are not in their proper alignment. It may also affect your facial structure and overall appearance, which may reduce your confidence to smile. Fortunately, orthodontic specialists may offer different treatments to restore your teeth in their proper position.

Dental Braces

Dental specialists may recommend this to fix crowded, crooked, misaligned, or protruding teeth. The appliance moves your teeth back to their ideal position through pressure, creating a more attractive and healthier smile. Dental braces often have wires, brackets, and rubber bands that push your teeth in their proper alignment.
Wearing the appliance may vary from person to person, depending on the complexity of their oral condition—the standard phase for the orthodontic treatment is two years. The ideal age to wear braces is between ages 8 to 14, as permanent teeth start to develop more fully. Adults may have to wear these orthodontic appliances longer than children do, as their facial bones and teeth are no longer growing.

Like dental braces, Invisalign may help straighten teeth and fix their alignment. This consists of clear, removable aligners, making it an ideal choice for those who do not want to get metal wires and brackets. Invisalign may help fix overly crowded or widely spaced teeth. The clear aligners may also help correct overbites, crossbites, or simple malocclusions. Invisalign, however, may not be a viable option for certain cases of misalignment or complex bite problems.

Aesthetics and comfort are the main benefits of wearing these aligners. You do not have to wear metal wires or headgears to achieve the smile you want. You can use a simple toothbrush and dental floss to clean the aligners. You do not have to worry about your diet, as you can simply remove the aligners when you eat. The aligners are also smooth, eliminating irritation on your gums and the insides of your mouth.
